As the 3-year SUNRISE project slowly draws to a close, its consortium proudly shares the final wave of achievements that reflect the project’s lasting impact on the future of CCAM. From launching the most advanced version of its Safety Assurance Framework (SAF) handbook to high-profile presentations at key European events, SUNRISE is finishing strong, with an eye on legacy and scale-up.
A Refined, Feature-Rich SAF Handbook v3 Is Now Live
At the heart of the SUNRISE initiative is the Safety Assurance Framework (SAF), a comprehensive approach for validating the safety of CCAM systems. The SAF employs a scenario-based methodology that supports a combination of virtual, track, and real-life testing environments, ensuring realistic and repeatable assessments. It also provides mechanisms to monitor and maintain safety throughout the entire lifecycle of the CCAM system.
To make the SAF practical and accessible, SUNRISE developed the SAF Interactive Handbook, a web-based, co-creation platform designed for ease of use by diverse stakeholders including OEMs, regulators, researchers, and safety assessors.
Now in its third and most advanced version, the SAF Handbook includes:
-
Full suite of use case videos to illustrate practical applications of the SAF.
-
A built-in AI-powered chatbot to guide users through the platform and answer questions.
-
An intuitive interface to create, format, store, test, and monitor safety scenarios.
-
Scenario generation using both data-based and knowledge-based approaches, including innovative data sources like drone footage for environments that are difficult to simulate.
By enabling the creation and management of realistic, diverse test scenarios, the SAF Handbook supports scalable and harmonized safety assessments across Europe and beyond.

Engaging the Ecosystem: SUNRISE at the ITS Congress in Seville and EUCAD 2025
In its final phase, SUNRISE participated in two key European events to showcase results and gather feedback:
-
ITS Congress in Seville: SUNRISE took center stage at the ERTICO – ITS Europe Stand (C5), engaging attendees with the SAF innovations and promoting the SAF Handbook.
-
EUCAD 2025: The SUNRISE team presented the Data Framework (DF) demo on a dedicated stage. Among the audience was Pedro Alfonso Pérez, the project’s European Commission officer, who praised the team’s progress and the robustness of the demonstrated features.
Both appearances played a vital role in fostering dialogue and reinforcing the project’s practical relevance in the evolving CCAM landscape.
Final Event – 18 June 2025: Private Showcase for SAF Stakeholders
To mark the conclusion of the SUNRISE project, a private Final Event will take place on 18 June 2025 at Applus+ IDIADA Headquarters in Santa Oliva, Spain. This exclusive gathering is designed for SAF target users and key stakeholders, including safety authorities, OEMs, regulators, researchers, and other CCAM experts.
The event will serve as a crucial moment to present the near-final version of the SUNRISE Safety Assurance Framework (SAF). At this stage, collecting input from the expert community is vital to ensure that the framework is aligned with real-world needs, practical constraints, and regulatory expectations. Expert feedback will directly inform the final refinements of the SAF and contribute to shaping a robust, widely applicable framework for CCAM safety assurance.
In addition to technical presentations and live demonstrations, participants will have the opportunity to engage directly with the SUNRISE team, explore IDIADA’s advanced vehicle testing facilities, and take part in collaborative discussions that will influence the final outputs of the project.
A Future-Proof Framework for Safer Mobility
Working alongside twin initiatives like V&V Methods, SAKURA, and AVSC, SUNRISE has delivered a harmonised, extendable, and standards-aligned SAF ready to accelerate the safe deployment of automated mobility systems. By engaging the full spectrum of stakeholders, from local regulators to global certifiers, SUNRISE has laid the groundwork for scalable, trustworthy CCAM systems across Europe.
With the project now concluding, its results, and especially the SAF Handbook, remain open for further growth, collaboration, and adoption.
